It is set in the Netherlands, in one of the eastern provinces, close to the German border. Lende, the name of the village in the book, refers to Delden, a town where salt was accidentally found at the end of the 19th century, when a baron was looking for drinking water for the local population. Salt is still extracted there today. So there is a historical background to this story. Reugebrink is a Dutch writer living in Ghent (Belgium).
